Emasculation of Men

I called my friend Farshad (name changed to protect the metrosexual innocent) the other day to see if he wanted to see Mission Impossible with me (overrated, but whatever), but he told me he and his homie Pedram (name changed as well) have plans this weekend. I thought nothing of it. Before going to the movie that Saturday I decided to pop into my favorite spa and get my nails done, and guess who I see in decked out in white robes and cucumber facial masks getting their pedicure on…

Yep, you guessed it, Farshad and Pedram. Turns out they turned down my invitation to watch an action flick for a day at the spa!

I don’t know about you guys, but men my grandfather, and even my father’s age never saw the inside of a hair salon, let alone a freaking spa. What is it with men these days? Why have they gotten so soft?? When I wore short skirts as a teenager my dad would tell my mom “Be dokhtaret begoo bere lebasesho avaz kone.” He wouldn’t even tell me himself! And then my friend’s boyfriend told her to wear sexier clothes when they go out to the clubs. What happened to gheyrat? Why are men such…well…emasculated? Do we women have anything to do with it? Are women more manly and hence men more womanly? Isn’t this one of those signs that the world is coming to an end??

Hey guys! In respond to the topic/question mentioned on your fb page: (been getting stalked on fb so had to copy paste here hehehe)

if we’re talking Iranian man specifically, specially the ones inside Iran..I think it goes back to how we take everything to “extremes”..efraat..just like how we empty an entire bottle of cologne/perfume on ourselves ..Just like how the girls over do the makeup, the men have heard of “grooming” but instead of letting it suffice to just being clean, shaved and not stinky they get their eyebrows done and take longer than girls to do their hair..they’ve been told by us women ( and that includes mothers) that theyre not sensitive/caring enough so now theyre overdo us in those departments lol..and as long as mothers/gfs/wife view this as acceptable and encourage it, instead of letting them embrace their “masculinity”..we have no one to blame but ourselves.

    1. Well said Nina!

I would also like to add that women in general these days would like to be seen as equals yet they would like to be treated like precious flowers and like a lady. I think us as women are a bit confusing in what we want, so we confuse men…Farzad even during the show stated “Pas shomaha chi mikhayn??” which is echoed by many men. This shows that you cannot generalize in regards to what women and men want. I am not blaming anyone…This topic is something that many women AND men have been concerned about for a very long time. I am sure we at Iranican are not the first to talk about this issue.

  2. This episode sucked quite badly. For a good portion of the show, Elnaz was just fighting with Shahed trying to prove her traditional viewpoints and not making any useful (or at least entertaining) contribution to discussions. Eiman’s portrait of Golshifteh was kind of narrow minded too.

You played few songs that were interesting though.

    1. Sorry that you felt that way :(

I swear Elnaz is not as traditional as you’d think– out of curiosity, do you have an opinion on the matter?

  3. I think this topic is humiliating and frankly I’m a bit offended by how Sarah Ravani has written the intro on this topic!

    1. Maziar,

How is this topic humiliating? And I am sorry to hear that you were offended by the introduction. Sarah did not write it, I did. In no ways did I mean for it to sound offensive. The things said in the introduction are the personal experiences of a friend, and questions many women have brought up in conversations about men in general, not just Iranian men. Once again, I am really sorry and did not mean to offend anyone.

    2. Maziar jan,

Even though I did not write this intro– I would have to say that I agree with Elnaz’s point. I think its great that men are making more of an effort to be well put together however, there is a line… personally, i don’t want really want to see my man at the spa… I think that there are limits. I’m sorry that intro offended you but I have to say I completely agree with the point! ahhhh! :)

  4. There is not one man jack in a hundred with any back-bone any-more.
why, scarcely one man in ten butchers his own swine, wives are no
longer taken by brute force, and duels are hardly ever fought, and
    then only with childish pistols.

  5. Gosh you girls are fighting on this one?loool
I haven’t listened to this podcast yet but judging by the comments it should be very interesting :-)

  6. First of all I apologize for Penglish Writing last time, I will make it right:)
I Totally agree with Elnaz, Farzad confirmation and example given by Houshabg( Family based on loyalty not economic view), however I am sure Nasim has same Idea but she puts that in different way, She never think marriage life as a business trade:)

  7. Since I discovered this podcast station, I have been listening to the previous ones and I enjoy every single one of them.

I appreciate how this podcast station is composed of young minds. This allows a greater public to pinpoint pending topics that many find taboo. Unfortunately the down side of this concept is not having everyone satisfied to their taste.

    So here is my point:

It takes a Woman (mother) to raise a woman as it takes a Man (father) to raise a man. I have great respect to single parents, because I’ve seen my father abandon us and have my mother go through this with great difficulty. However, I chose my grand-father as my role model and I think I am manly. It is important to look good and clean as I do ( fixing eyebrows, waxing chest, going to the spa, working out, and working in the armed forces as an infantry and now a pilot…), However men should stick to their instinctive response ( paying the tab, opening the door, protecting your loved ones, making sure they do not attract the negative attention, and other points that do not necessarily need to be mentioned).

There will always be an imbalance in the demographic status, and I’m not saying that men should beat women as I find physical abuse a sign of mental weakness. But the topic drifted to marriage and parenting. Many people Forget that a commitment is made to commit to no matter what. And Feminist women should not base their point of view on the percentage of men that are too much of a coward and extremely irresponsible to understand the value of their commitment. Even if a separation is the only solution, the father of that family should make sure that his kids have the required necessity to live with comfort and ease. This does not mean that the woman should stay at home sobbing about her faith. Women have great potential of will and endurance and I’m certain getting involved in the job market should not be a problem at all.

without stretching this topic too much:

Even if you put a thousand great feminine minds to give one valuable advice on how to be a man it will not be as simple and important as Men giving advice to other men about their masculinity. and vice versa.

I hope I did not offend anyone…. After all we are instinctive beings, instincts never lie, and we are made to be in conflict with each other about our sex.

    Cheers doosetoon daram :)
