Culture Shock

I remember when my cousin first moved to the United States 11 years ago at the age of 16.  She had taken English class in Iran for years and knew the basics, so I thought that taking her out with my high school friends for a fun night out would be the perfect opportunity for her to get a little taste of the American culture and put her language skills to use.  Little did I know what troubles lied ahead that evening.  First things first, my good ol’ American friends bombarded her with questions like, “What up homie,” or “Trying to kick it tonight,” which confused the heck out of my poor cousin who had simply thought that the correct greeting in English was, “Hi, how are you?”  As the night proceeded, she watched in horror as BOYS (God forbid) joined our group for a night of driving around town and hanging out at friend’s houses.  As she began her life in the United States, I noticed the difficulties she faced doing things I had always taken for granted, whether it was trying to act cool in high school, or just simply trying to find her way around town without getting lost.

What is the best way to cope to a new environment?  Does it always have to be difficult?  Tune in next week as our co-hosts discuss their experiences with culture shock either in Iran or the U.S., and how they were able to overcome the differences.  Tell us about an experience YOU had dealing with culture shock- how did you overcome the difficulties to adjusting to a new environment?
