Alcohol and Drinking

Shots, booze, and liquid courage…

Can you imagine life without them? In today’s society it is near impossible to go a day without some form of exposure to alcohol. Each year, a typical young person in the United States is exposed to more than 1,000 commercials for beer and wine coolers and several thousand fictional drinking incidents on television. Alcohol has become such a huge part of our culture, that Americans now spend over $90 billion dollars total on alcohol each year, and each year students spend $5.5 billion on alcohol, that’s more then they spend on soft drinks, tea, milk, juice, coffee, or books combined!!

But is there anything wrong with that? Everyone knows us Iranians love our alcohol, from Sharabe-Shiraz (which is probably one of the best wines ever) to margaritas we are known for our love for exotic drinks. A typical night out as an Iranian-American includes throwing back a few shots to make it memorable, but where does that consumption cross the line? Have we become too dependent on this substance, or is it innocent fun?  Has alcohol been too glorified by the media?
